Alice tells her department chairman of her diagnosis and agrees that it's not wise for her to continue teaching. She returns to the university in the fall to discover some of her students have complained about her performance the previous semester. She manages to hold herself together until the end of the semester and she and John spend their time off at their summer home. He throws himself completely into that while Alice continues to try to cope with her failing memory. John, a professor and researcher at Harvard, devotes himself to finding a medicine that will halt the progression of the disease. She doesn't tell her family for awhile but finally realizes that she has to tell her husband, John. Alice is devastated when she's diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

When she begins forgetting things, she puts it down to a combination of age, her hectic schedule, and menopause. She is in good shape physically and feels that her life is mostly on track.
